DATCP currently has an opening for a Pesticide Analysis Senior Chemist (Chemist – Senior) position within the Bureau of Laboratory Services (BLS). The position is located in Madison at 2601 Agriculture Drive, Suite 150. We are only minutes away from the Beltline Highway, Interstate 90 and Highway 51 for quick access to local restaurants, retail and service locations.

Position Summary

 The Pesticide Analysis Senior Chemist position is responsible for the analysis of agriculturally related samples, including acute pesticide/fertilizer spills, as well as soil and other matrices for pesticides and/or industrial chemical residues, and hemp samples for THC levels.
All work is performed in accordance with agency and laboratory protocols, policies, quality assurance and safety standards. In addition, this position may be required to give expert testimony in court.

Salary Information

 The classification of this position is Chemist – Senior, which is in schedule-range 15-03 with a starting pay of $24.00-$27.00 per hour, based on qualifications. This position is not represented by a collective bargaining unit. A 12-month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan.

Job Details

 All state employees are required to report their COVID vaccination status, whether they are vaccinated or not, and must provide supporting documentation if vaccinated. Newly hired employees will be required to submit this information within their first two weeks of employment.
A criminal background check will be performed on the selected applicant prior to an offer of employment.

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without DATCP sponsorship) at the time of application.

Qualifications

 Minimally qualified candidates will have each of the following:
  • Experience with laboratory instruments related to this position, including GC/MS, LC/MS, ICP/MS.
  • Experience with the following steps of sample analysis; sample prep/extraction, instrument analysis, data reporting, presentation of data to others, etc.
  • Experience in preparing of laboratory samples.
In addition, highly qualified candidates will have one or more of the following:
  • Experience testing samples for pesticide and/or toxin residues in soil, vegetation and other environmental samples or testing feed samples for natural components and feed additives.
  • Experience training others on laboratory methods and instrumentation relating to complex testing.
  • Experience performing laboratory instrument maintenance, including mass spectral systems.
