This opening is for a full-time Registered Nurse (RN) with the SD Department of Health in the Oglala Lakota County Community Health office located in Pine Ridge, SD. The home station for this position may be located in a community other than Pine Ridge. Transportation will be provided to Pine Ridge for service delivery. The RN works under the direction of a Public Health Manager and leads a local agency team that may include health professionals and para-professionals. May provide a variety of program services including Women, Infants, and Children's Program(WIC) to promote nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices, pregnancy related services to promote healthy outcomes, immunizations, school-based preventive health services, public health emergency preparedness, health education to individuals, families, and communities, and other public health services. Accountabilities include psychosocial, physical, nutritional, and other health related assessments of individuals and populations to determine needs; development of client-centered plans of care with measurable outcomes, provision of care to meet identified outcomes; documentation of services to maintain accurate client records and facilitate continuity of care; evaluation of the effectiveness of interventions and progress towards meeting goals.
Lifting required to complete anthropometric measurements of infants and young children. Daily travel to Pine Ridge during the work week required for service delivery. Hours extending beyond the 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. workday and on Saturdays may be required.
Licenses and Certifications:
Must be licensed or be eligible to be licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in South Dakota.

Knowledge of:
  • public health principles and practices;
  • maternal, infant, and child health and nutrition;
  • childhood immunizations;
  • infant safe sleep practices;
  • infant/child developmental milestones.
Skills/Abilities:
  • motivate participants to make decisions/set goals on how they would like to improve their health;
  • provide nutrition and health information effectively via one-to-one and in group settings; virtual settings (zoom, teams, telemedicine); phone and text; and/or online;
  • share education at the client's level of understanding;
  • prioritize and facilitate referrals within the context of multiple and complicated client needs;
  • apply federal and state regulations; policies and procedures in the functions of the position;
  • work both autonomously and collaboratively in a team environment, demonstrate flexibility;
  • demonstrate cultural competency when working with socioeconomically and culturally diverse populations;
  • recognize opportunities for outreach, marketing, and partnership building;
  • communicate effectively with language interpreters either in-person, by phone, or during virtual service delivery;
  • multitask, prioritize complex situations and adapt to quickly shifting priorities; 
  • identify and propose solutions for barriers preventing access to services.
