Juvenile Corrections Officer
Requirements (Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification):
- High school diploma or GED or have at least 1 year of full-time equivalent paid or volunteer experience direct provision of care to children.
- Must be physically able to provide individual and group control monitoring of residents' behavior.
- Must be age 21 or older.
- Must pass extensive background screening process, including a drug screen and polygraph exam
Preferred Qualifications:
- 1 year of work experience working with delinquent youth in the supervision of activities.
- Possession of valid driver's license and auto liability insurance preferred.
Special Working Conditions and/or Hazards:
- Employees work indoors and are protected from weather conditions or contaminants, but not necessarily occasional temperature changes.
- Secure correctional facility, with some exposure to unruly and, at time, out-of-control resident populations.
Job Duties:
- Provide a safe and secure environment for residents, through active behavior management of residents' living arrangements within a unit setting to assure safety and well-being consistent with assessed risk levels.
- Monitors residents assuring safety and well-being consistent with assessed risk level.
- Maintains the unit and living areas in clean and orderly fashion through teaching skills and supervises residents on work details, recreation activities in the pod and in the gym.
- Escorts new admissions around the unit and advises residents of their room assignments.
- Clearly explains the responsibilities of youth living on the unit to new admissions.
- Refers residents for Psychology evaluations and handles residents' daily medical requests in a confidential manner.
- Counsels for crisis intervention on individual or group basis.
- Provides verbal and written assessment of residents' behavior.
- Physically participate in and successfully complete all required in-service training, including, but not limited to, CPR, First Aid, Response to Resistance techniques, etc.

- Must possess analytical skills/abilities, which include: Ability to organize Unit activities according to established priorities; Ability to use crisis intervention counseling skills to resolve situations such as a verbal altercation between two residents or a resident refusing to comply with unit rules.
- Must possess clerical/administrative skills/abilities, which include: Ability to read, write and count in order to review Unit log entries, maintain written account of all extraordinary unit activities during assigned shift and maintain resident count.
- Must possess computer/technical skills/abilities, which include: Ability to take accurate phone messages and operate walkie-talkie to maintain the security of the facility.
- Must possess project/process management skills/abilities, which include: Ability to physically activate room monitoring panel and buttons. Ability to maintain confidentiality of residents' healthcare issues.
- Must possess written and oral communication skills/abilities, which include: Interpersonal skills requiring judgment and tact to communicate effectively with residents who are engaged in acting out behavior; ability to work as a team with coworkers.
- Must possess other skills/abilities, which include: Ability to physically participate in training and use approved physical intervention techniques such as blocks for personal protection, body hold techniques, arm hold techniques, and take downs, when necessary; must be active and ambulatory to respond to need for supervision, monitoring and behavior management. (Ex. A fight between residents).
- Must possess knowledge skills/abilities, which include: Ability to observe, identify and monitor closely unusual or escalating behavior patterns; ability to provide auditory and visual monitoring of youth in assigned rooms; ability to open, shut and lock doors.
