GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the general supervision of an employee of a higher classification, performs skilled work at the journeyman level in the maintenance and repair of gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuel powered automotive and related equipment. Work involves the performance of skilled tasks in the mechanical repair and maintenance of automobiles, light and heavy duty trucks, motor graders, bulldozers, mowers, ATV's, tractors, and other standard and specialized equipment. Assignments are received in the form of repair orders and verbal instructions. Employees of this classification are distinguished from the Automotive Mechanic classification by a greater level of experience. Employees of this class work under general supervision, using independent judgment as to method of repair. Performs other work as requested.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
 
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency, and three years of journeyman level experience as an automotive mechanic (3 years journeyman level = 5 years of experience).
 
SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
 
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES/REGISTRATIONS
(Unless otherwise specified below, must possess at the time of appointment and must be maintained current throughout employment in this classification.)
Must have a valid Louisiana driver's license at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment in this classification.
Position(s) of this classification may require possession of a Louisiana Commercial Driver's license (CDL) Class A, B, or C (with appropriate endorsements) at the time of application, upon the date of appointment, or within the six-month probationary period. If license is required, must be maintained throughout employment in this position.
