GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under the general supervision of a Senior Juvenile Probation Officer/Post Certified, performs professional office or fieldwork in pre-dispositional investigations, counsels and supervises juvenile offenders placed on supervised probation by Juvenile Court judges. Work involves the collection, examination and evaluation of information obtained through office and fieldwork interviews in determining the appropriate action and/or recommendations for disposition of assigned cases. Work may also involve evaluating and monitoring delinquent cases and families of juvenile offenders, and occasionally reviewing other Probation Officer casework files. Some employees of this class may be required to carry a weapon, work various hours, including nights, and ride with police officers to serve warrants, monitor probation conditions, conduct drug screens or arrest juveniles. Employees of this class are commissioned probation officers of Juvenile Court with powers of arrest and all other powers afforded peace officers (as stated in LSA-Cp.C.Art. 116 (22) and Art. 421 (A) and LSA-C.Cr.P. Art 899 (F). Performs other work as requested.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, social work, sociology, psychology, or a closely related field.

 

SUBSTITUTIONS

Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES/REGISTRATIONS

(Unless otherwise specified below, must possess at the time of appointment and must be maintained current throughout employment in this classification.)
Employees of this class are required to meet minimum physical standards as set forth by the Louisiana Council on Police Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.), and must successfully complete and pass a certified P.O.S.T. training program approved by the Louisiana Council within one calendar year from the initial employment or employee will be terminated. Passing the P.O.S.T. examination within one calendar year is a requirement of employment, therefore the probationary period will end after the employee has completed six (6) months of employment and passed the P.O.S.T. examination.
Position(s) of this classification may require a valid Louisiana driver's license. If license is required, must be maintained throughout employment in this position.

EXAMINATION

Entry Probation Series written examination required (may take up to 2 ½ hours from test start time). Subject areas and other exam preparation information are available at: https://www.brla.gov/261/Examination-Preparation. Written examinations are available on most Tuesdays, 8:30 – 9:00 am, check-in, Thursdays, *12:00 - 12:30 pm, and Fridays, 8:30 – 9:00 am check-in. Please call Human Resources Recruiting and Examination at 389-3132 to confirm testing dates and times. Test check-in is on a first come-first served basis. There are occasions where the test room is filled to capacity and applicants are asked to return on another day for testing. Picture identification, proof of social security number and a completed online employment application are required for test room admittance. *Where written exam volume is expected to be high, check-in of applicants may begin as early as 11:30 am in order to complete the check-in process prior to the required 12:30 cut-off time.
