Land Surveyor Intern
In partnership with the Mark Twain National Forest; Supervisor's Office of the USDA Forest Service, Greening Youth Foundation seeks a 26-week, Civil Engineering Resource Assistant (RA) Intern to assist with providing technical engineering work on complete conventional projects of limited scope, or a portion of a larger and more diverse project. This internship will provide exposure to the Forest Service and rural Missouri communities.

Combines productive work with learning a variety of advanced skills, techniques, and procedures in order to increase ability to perform in higher level work and to assist employees at higher grade levels. Receives formal and on-the-job training in more advanced skills, techniques, and procedures by performing a variety of productive land surveying work.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assists with field cadastral surveying projects.
- Conducts limited record searches, evaluates the information obtained, and performs the necessary survey work associated with the initial location or re-identification of property lines, section corners, and surveying monuments.
- Assists survey parties in the execution of limited cadastral, geodectic, and engineering survey work.
- Uses programmable calculators to compute traverse closures and other geometric solutions. Prepares routine legal descriptions, plats, and survey reports.
- Assists with routine legal descriptions, plats, and survey reports. Evaluates and tabulates such records for field use in the Forest land survey activities.
- Consults with Registrar of Deeds, County Surveyors, other Registered Land Surveyors, property owners, Government officials, and all other sources, for record information of previous surveys or other data which affect or could affect the location of Forest Service property lines.
Experience and Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or higher in expected. Preferred degree in land surveying, mapping sciences, surveying technology or related field.
- Skilled in use of theodolites, levels, electronic distance measuring devices, and other equipment used in cadastral, geodectic, and engineering survey work.
- Interest in environment/natural resource management and the US Forest Service.
- Ability to work both independently and with others collaboratively on projects.
Work Environment:
Will be required to travel and work in the backcountry and other remote locations on the forest, independently and in teams.
The Mark Twain National Forest includes about 1.5 million acres of Federal lands in 29 Missouri counties. The Forest has 6 Ranger Districts, 7 Wilderness Areas, a large number of Missouri Natural Areas, 2 National Trails, the Glade Top Trail National Scenic Byway, over 700 caves, and the Eleven Point and Lower Current National Scenic Rivers. It is within driving distance of several recreational lakes in Missouri & Arkansas, as well as to cultural and sports opportunities in St. Louis, Springfield, Columbia, and Kansas City, among others.
We are truly a working Forest as we accomplish a full range of vegetation and recreation management activities on the forest include timber harvest and regeneration activities, TSI, prescribed fire, developed and dispersed recreation, and mining.
Located in the Missouri Ozarks, the oldest mountain range in the country, the Mark Twain is comprised mainly of upland hardwoods and some associated shortleaf pine, with unique natural communities scattered throughout. Prehistoric & historic evidence of people in the Ozarks is common. The Trail of Tears winds its way through parts of the Forest and we host the Remember the Removal riders each year as they pass by.
