Special Uses Intern, Marietta, OH

Position Overview:
Intern will assist the Special Uses Program Manager in processing Special Use Permit renewals. Duties will include office and field work supporting permit renewals and occasional walk-in business associated with lands and special uses. The position will be partnered with a Realty Technician and receive formal, and on-the-job, training to acquire experience to produce complete special use folders/packets, relevant maps, enter data into SUDs, produce a special use permit in SUDs, conduct field inspections, and follow-up with the appropriate permitee to address identified deficiencies. Further, the position will become well versed in agency policies and regulations associated with land and special uses.

The Wayne National Forest (WNF) is a patchwork of public land that covers over a quarter million acres of Appalachian foothills of southeastern Ohio. The Forest is divided into three units managed out of two Ranger District offices located in Nelsonville and Ironton, with a field office in Marietta. The Forest is within a day's drive of 1/3 of the US population and is a recreation/tourist destination hosting over 3 million visitors each year. The species diversity combined with the rural setting and interesting cultural environment, contribute to the unique lifestyle of the region.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assists with all aspects of Special Use Permit administration for activities within undeveloped and developed areas of the unit.
  • Reviews applications, determines potential impact on land and other visitors, and prepares documents associated with the permit.
  • Assists with performing compliance checks and inspections on existing permits under the Special-Use authorization.
  • Reviews a wide variety of uncomplicated special use permits (land use, recreation, and non-recreation) and minerals permits; making certain the use to be made of the land is compatible with Forest Service programs and objectives and that each permit fully protects the public interest.
  • Assists with internal coordination and review of permits and other lands and recreation proposals. This includes assisting in the preparation of the environmental analysis report (Categorical exclusion, EA, or environmental impact statement), for a variety of Recreation and land projects.

Experience and Qualifications:
  • Recent college/graduate student with a degree in any field acceptable.
  • Applicant should possess strong interpersonal communication skills and an ability to speak in a public setting
  • Proven ability to work on and track multiple ongoing projects
  • Ability to learn new skills quickly
  • Ability to work independently with a curious mind.
  • Have some experience writing reports, conducting formal, or informal, presentations, experience with the Microsoft suite of products (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are most used), and some knowledge of GIS would be helpful
  • Ability to perform duties in an office setting, as well as, field assignments which could require off-trail hiking through arduous terrain in hot-humid weather using a map and GPS
