Communications and Digital Media Intern

Major Duties
  • Work closely with Office of Education and Outreach staff, and subject matter experts to communicate science and natural resource issues and topics
  • Implement communication strategies and support Service-wide communication initiatives focused on water resources
  • Interview NPS scientists about science policy, accomplishments, and issues
  • Draft, edit, and post copy to NPS websites; design webpages using NPS content management system and templates.
  • Draft and edit NPS publications; design publications using NPS templates
  • Obtain illustrations, photographs, videos, and other visuals illustrating science in parks and format those visuals for webpages and print publications, including captioning video content
  • Develop social media content
  • Create narratives surrounding key natural resource themes, including developing talking points and writing draft press releases
Qualifications
Individual selected should have completed a bachelor's degree in communication or closely related field with a strong interest in natural resources OR a bachelor's degree in natural resources with demonstrated communication skills. Prior experience developing website content and designing webpages and excellent writing and editing skills are required.

Individual selected must have experience and/or training in communicating science information to diverse audiences. Experience should include:
  • Interviewing scientists and interpreting resulting information for public/non-scientific audiences for dissemination
  • Delivering presentations of science-related information
  • Writing and editing copy for web and print publications
  • Identifying visuals to illustrate content
  • Conceptualization, development, and implementation of communication products
  • Basic knowledge of HTML
Since the candidate will be working in a highly computerized environment, a demonstrated experience of word processing (Word), Adobe Creative Suite products (e.g., Photoshop, InDesign), content management systems, electronic spreadsheet (Excel), electronic mail is required.

Preferred:
  • Experience working with a government agency and/or the media, including assessing audience attributes, formulating communication strategies, writing press releases, press kits, and related informational materials and maintaining web content that meet established criteria
  • Experience using social media for work-related outreach
  • Ability to identify and take advantage of new communication venues (e.g. social media, local or national events)
  • Understanding of accessibility requirements
Work Environment
Work is performed primarily in an office setting, however when work is performed outside the office, it may be in field environments or at dirty, dusty, cold, hot, wet or some otherwise uncomfortable locations indoors and outdoors.
Vehicle/License Requirement
Selected candidate is responsible for daily commute
