The Department of Social Services is seeking a Public Information Officer. The Public Information Officer plans and implements communication services for the Department of Social Services. Responsibilities include directing communications with the media on department programs, services, and general information; coordinating presentations for various groups; managing the department's website; and assisting with special inter-agency projects.
This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Entry knowledge and abilities may be acquired through any combination of training and/or experience that will enable the incumbent to possess the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. A general qualification guideline is a bachelor's degree in mass communications or graphic arts and experience in media relations.
Knowledge of:
  • principles, methods, procedures, and strategies to carry out a public information program;
  • laws, policies, and procedures to distribute news and public information;
  • methods, techniques, and procedures to prepare and execute news releases, media kits, and educational materials;
  • web design principles and methods.
Ability to:
  • communicate effectively;
  • coordinate public information projects;
  • design educational materials;
  • effectively prioritize workload;
  • meet short deadlines;
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
