Summary / Objective
The Planning Intern position at the City of Leawood would have the ability to participate in operations and development review, assist in the development of the Comprehensive Plan update, provide staff support for Planning Commission Cases, and assist in the completion of assigned planning projects. 
Under the supervision of the Planning Official, the Planning Intern will be able to work on community development projects that help shape the City. The Planning Intern will work alongside seasoned Planners and observe the daily operations of a municipality planning department.
Essential Functions / Responsibilities
•Participates in the review of commercial and residential development and sign applications to ensure conformity with the principles of good planning and land use practices and for compliance with the City of Leawood’s Development Ordinance, codes, policies and guidelines.
•Assists in the creation of illustrations, maps, plans, plats, designs or other work for current planning, long-range planning, subdivision development, and land use regulation activities.
•Assists the Planners with gathering information for proposed development applications.
•Assists in conducting landscape reviews for compliance with approved plans and producing a landscape report.
•Employee may be asked by the supervisor to perform other duties that are not listed but are essential to the job.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Education, Training and Certification Requirements -
•Must be 18 years of age of older.
•Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
•Must have a minimum of two (2) to three (3) years in an undergraduate degree program, or one (1) year in a master' program, with an interest in Planning, Landscape Architecture, Architecture, or related field.
•Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite including Word and Excel.
•Must possess a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record per the City’s drivers Use of Vehicles for City Business policy throughout employment with the City.
Minimum Qualifications / Requirements -
•Ability to read, write, and understand the English language with proper spelling and grammar to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. 
•Ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines with effective results. 
•Ability to use safe work practices while on the job.
•Ability to work independently, as part of a team and/or with the public.  
•Ability to protect and maintain confidentiality of information.
•Knowledge of the basic principles and practices of urban and regional planning.
•Standard office procedures, systems and practices including the use of a computer.
Additional Information
The Planning Intern will work approximately 30 hours a week, between the hours of 8am-5pm, Monday through Friday. The Internship will last approximately 3 months.
