Research Assistant III - Stem Cell Biology (VCSCB)

New Research Assistant III position in the Vanderbilt Center for Stem Cell Biology (VCSCB) at Vanderbilt University. The individual who fills this position will be a key team member in the Vanderbilt Genome Editing Resource (VGER), a Vanderbilt core facility and critical component of the VCSCB. The Research Assistant III will report to the Manager of VGER, and will play an essential role in the operations of both the VCSCB and VGER by developing and providing services to Vanderbilt investigators who need to derive new human pluripotent stem cell lines, and by performing gene editing in already established lines. VGER, by competently providing these services, enables Vanderbilt investigators to perform state-of-the-art cellular, molecular and/or developmental biology experimentation in pluripotent stem cells.
 
The Research Assistant III will work together with VGER staff to culture and maintain induced pluripotent stem cells, develop new pluripotent stem cell lines, perform genome editing in both cell lines and mice, analyze experimental results and help to write project summaries. The Research Assistant III will also ensure the laboratory is prepared for experiments, provide research progress reports and prepare and present data. By successfully helping investigators to produce and genetically-modify human pluripotent stem cell lines, the performance of the Research Assistant III will be critical to the missions of Vanderbilt, the VCSCB, and VGER. To achieve these goals a high level of communication, teamwork, organization, and performance is required.
 
The Vanderbilt Center for Stem Cell Biology (VCSCB) reports to the Dean of Basic Sciences in the School of Medicine. This unit facilitates scientific communication between faculty members and oversees the operations of two fee-for-service based core facilities, the Vanderbilt Genome Editing Resource (VGER) and Creative Data Solutions (CDS). VGER currently supports over one hundred laboratories at Vanderbilt in the production and use of genetically-altered mice, and seeks to expand its already substantial scientific impact through the development and performance of services related to the production and genetic modification of human pluripotent stem cells.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist in protocol development to derive, maintain, and validate new induced pluripotent stemcell lines
  • Perform routine culture and genome editing of induced pluripotent stem cells
  • Assist others in performing and analyzing CRISPR/Cas-mediated mutagenesis in mice
  • Perform routine mouse husbandry and genotyping
  • Summarize and present experimental results in a clear, organized and coherent manner
  • Ensure laboratory is prepared for experiments
Profile of an Ideal Candidate
  • Bachelor’s degree in biology or a related field is necessary.
  • Master’s degree in biology or a related field is preferred.
  • At least three years of relevant laboratory experience is strongly preferred.
  • Molecular biology skills including tissue culture, PCR, generation and purification of DNA is necessary.
  • Experience in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is necessary.
  • Knowledge of mammalian development, gene regulation, cell differentiation and genome editing is strongly preferred.
  • Previous cell culture experience is strongly preferred.
  • Experience performing CRISPR/Cas-mutagenesis and induced pluripotent stem cell culture and maintenance is preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of mouse husbandry and genotyping is preferred.
  • Experience in the use of FileMaker Pro databases and other online data resources is preferred.
