Internship - Planning Analytics

Role:  Planning Analytics Intern
Team: Planning Operations & Insights
Level: Undergraduate
Requirements: Undergraduate students must have completed at least their third year of university studies; graduate students may have graduated in 2020 or be returning to school in the fall of 2020. This is a paid internship that will also include financial support for summer housing and temporary relocation to the area.
Location: Ventura, CA

Internship Overview
As the Planning Analytics Intern, you will use various modern analytical tools to generate insights to enhance operational planning decisions in direct support of Patagonia’s mission to save our home planet. The work will span smaller/shorter projects in direct support of Planning Operations & Insights, as well as a larger analytical project of strategic importance.

What You’ll Do

  • Build high-quality reports, dashboards, and/or analytics using various modern BI/analytical tools, such as R, Python, Tableau, Power BI
  • Engineer/shape data as needed using SQL, Alteryx, and/or similar tools
  • Apply systems thinking/analysis to a strategic business problem
  • Distill salient analytical insights and present them to executive and/or cross-functional audiences

Internship Project
In addition to daily assignments that support your team, you will be assigned a project to complete by the end of the summer. You will present the results of your project at the end of your internship with your team, and possibly a company-wide audience.
This project is subject to change/evolve with Patagonia’s business needs and priorities.

  • Using a “systems thinking” approach, model the tensions/complexity of operational, financial, and environmental trade-off decisions inherent in our mission-driven business model
  • Work cross-functionally to develop and pressure-test base assumptions
  • Propose a roadmap for operationalizing the model for key decision-makers
  • Present the model, key insights, and future opportunities to senior leadership

Experience You Bring

  • Undergraduate student
  • Academic, internship, and/or work-based expertise in Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Finance, and/or other relevant subject matter expertise
  • Strong quantitative acumen (mathematics, statistics, algorithm development, etc.)
  • Formal coursework and/or experience in systems thinking/analysis
  • Tailoring content for and presenting to an executive and/or cross-functional audience
  • Technical skills:
  • Experience modeling systems using VenSim software
  • Experience building reporting/analytics using various modern tools (R, Tableau, etc.)
  • Experience with data engineering /ETL using various languages and/or self-service tools
