Program Description:  

The Summer Intern Program provides outstanding undergraduate students with the opportunity to gain valuable work experience with a unique institution. Through project work assignments and professional development activities, summer analysts are provided with an extensive understanding of the work of the Federal Reserve Employee Benefits System, which exists to serve employees and retirees from across the country and abroad.
 
The Office of Employee Benefits:

The Office of Employee Benefits (OEB), located in Newark, N.J., comprises a staff of 52 professionals who oversee benefit programs for approximately 45,000 current and former employees of the Federal Reserve. The OEB was established in 1934 to administer the Federal Reserve System’s Retirement Plan. Over time, the OEB's responsibilities have expanded to include additional retirement benefits, health benefits, life insurance, long-term disability and other personal protection plans.
The OEB's mission is to be a center of excellence, providing leadership in formulating employee benefit programs and operating these programs on behalf of the Reserve Banks, Board of Governors and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau with outstanding customer service, sound and cost-efficient operations, professional expertise and ongoing innovation.

Summer interns at the OEB can be placed in any of the following areas, or in a rotation involving some or all of the following:
 
• Asset Management (investments)
• Communications
• Health and Welfare
• Legal and Compliance
• Plan Administration (benefits operations)
• Finance and Accounting
• Information Technology
 
Requirements:
 
The Summer Intern Program requires that applicants have completed at least their sophomore year of college by the beginning of the internship. The program is extremely competitive and size is limited. As a summer intern at the OEB, applicants must have a demonstrated interest in business, finance, benefits, human resources, information systems, legal, compliance, communications or a related discipline and a strong academic record. Specific skills may be required depending on area and project. General requirements include:
 
• Working knowledge of MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint;
• Strong analytical and critical thinking skills demonstrated by the ability to assimilate new information, make sound decisions and manage multiple tasks;
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and written;
• Ability to grasp information quickly;
• Attention to detail; and
• Ability to work productively in a high-performing, collegial atmosphere.
