The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a Board and Council Associate to provide administrative assistance to the Board and Council team and the Deputy Executive Director of Development and Global Initiatives. The Board is the highest governing body of the organization and is responsible for overseeing HRW and advancing the human rights cause around the globe. The Human Rights Watch Council serves as a primary vehicle to connect supporters of HRW to the human rights movement and consists of members in over 30 cities who belong to over 20 city committees engaged in Council activities. This position is based in New York and reports to the Council Liaison and Board Liaison, both based in New York.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Provide administrative support to the Deputy Executive Director of Development and Global Initiatives, including scheduling, calendar management, arranging travel plans, processing finances, and other day-to-day duties as needed;
2. Coordinate donor briefings, other meetings materials as needed, and follow-up for the Deputy Executive Director of Development and Global Initiatives;
3. Provide administrative support for the execution of Board meetings, Board committee meetings, and the annual international Board trip including scheduling, preparing for and taking minutes at meetings, preparing meeting materials, responding to inquiries, and conducting follow up to meetings;
4. Provide support in the production of the annual Council Summit conference as well as other Council communications and materials, including the Council Membership Guidelines, Council Events Calendar, Council Facebook Group, and other Council initiatives undertaken by the Council Steering Committee;
5. Maintain departmental documents and records, including onboarding materials, directories, and the Development intranet site;
6. Assist the Board and Council team in the coordination and implementation of internal departmental communication initiatives;
7. Maintain Board contacts, materials, and documents and organize board materials on internal databases as well as the online Board platform;
8. Assist with the onboarding of new Development & Outreach staff;
9. Liaise with Development & Outreach staff to coordinate donor visits to the New York Office;
10. Track and maintain Board, Council, donor, and prospect records, documents, and lists in internal databases;
11. Record finances and process invoices for Board and Council projects, events, and meetings;
12. Assist with the recruitment and mentoring of interns; and
13. Carry out other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: A bachelor’s degree in communications, social science, or a related field is required.

Experience: A minimum of one year of relevant work experience is required. A demonstrated interest in human rights is highly desirable. 

Related Skills and Knowledge:

1. Prior office/administration experience and strong organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail are required.
2. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required.
3. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with a wide variety of audiences, including Board members, donors, and senior leadership, are required.
4. Ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks simultaneously is required.
5. Self‐motivation and the ability to take initiative, prioritize with minimal supervision, and work independently, as well as function as a member of a team, are required.
6. Ability to make sound decisions consistent with functions is required.
7. Proficiency in computer programs including MS Office applications is required; experience with Raiser’s Edge or other donor databases is highly desirable.

Other: Please note that occasional evening work will be required for special events. 

Salary and Benefits: Salary range starts at $47, 436. Human Rights Watch offers comprehensive employer-paid benefits, including medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance, an outstanding retirement savings plan and twenty (20) days of vacation per year.
