Internship - ACE EPIC NPS GA: Jimmy Carter YCC Crew Lead

Summary: American Conservation Experience (ACE), a nonprofit conservation corps, in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS), is seeking ONE FMMS Intern interested in dedicating 52-weeks to the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site. The primary responsibilities of this position will be to Solo-lead a group of 6 locally recruited high school students to complete conservation projects and environmental education at Jimmy Carter National Historic Site. Leaders will work with students on conservation projects, during business hours Monday- Friday, with nights and weekends off, under the supervision of a Park staff member.

End Date: July 26, 2019
* A 10-week minimum commitment is required*

Compensation: The ACE intern will serve approximately 40 hours/week and receive a living allowance of $560/week for food, housing, and incidentals paid out biweekly. An additional travel reimbursement not-to-exceed $650 is available.
 
Background: Jimmy Carter National Historic Site is located in Plains, Georgia. Plains is a rural community in Southwest Georgia with full services available in Americus, GA (10 miles); Albany, GA (40 miles); and Columbus, GA (50 miles).
 
Specifically, the YCC Leader will:
  • Take part in a one week orientation prior to the crew starting
  • Complete a final week of the season after the YCC members have left to complete final paperwork
  • Act as a Crew Supervisor, by facilitating teamwork, managing field-based tasks, and guiding crew dynamics
  • Serve as an Advisor, by training members in technical conservation work skills, mentoring personal and professional development, and teaching environmental stewardship
  • Act as a Project Manager, by communicating with Park Staff, ensuring successful and timely completion of work projects.
  • Perform tasks as a Program Administrator, by organizing logistics, completing documentation.
 
Qualifications:
  • Experience working with youth or young adults (preferably ages 15-19), teaching or environmental education a plus
  • Experience with conservation work skills or related skills is preferred construction, landscaping, and gardening
  • Must have a valid state drivers license 
  • Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, exposed to the elements and most occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more
  • Current Basic First Aid and CPR certification required by the start of position
 
Required:
  • Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Must be 18 to 35 years old
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with resource professionals within NPS
  • Must have a valid driver's license; clean driving record, and ability to provide documentation
  • A self-starter, independent, organized and motivated
  • Willing to perform duties indoors and outdoors when needed
  • Must have excellent communication skills and be able to educate guests of all backgrounds about programs and Park information
  • Ability to carry out projects adequately with minimal supervision
 
Preferred:
  • Experience and/or knowledge in the mission of the NPS and other federal land management agencies. 
The interns must be willing to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner. Drug users should not consider applying, as ACE reserves the right to require drug testing.
