Youth Program Leaders

The Leader will assist in the successful completion of MCC natural resource and community service projects, on-site management of a crew, monitoring of crew dynamics to ensure a high level of crew motivation and functioning, as well as the delivery of the full range of MCC programs. This is not a 9-5 job, rather it is an experience where long hours and camping for an extended time away from home, often in remote locations on difficult terrain and in all weather conditions, are to be expected.
 
High School and Middle School Expedition Leaders and their crews will camp for the full duration of their youth members’ terms, often times in remote locations on varied terrain and in all weather conditions. All Nation and Youth Conservation Corps Leaders will be locally-based programs with the potential for episodic overnights with their crews throughout the season.
 
  1. All Nations Leader (Leads ages 14-18): Lead American Indian middle school and high school aged teens from the greater Great Falls and Billings areas in daily outdoor service projects in multiple locations near the population center which they serve. Leaders will work side-by-side with teachers and public land representatives. Leaders will be based in the Central Divide region.
  2. Middle School Expedition Leader (Leads ages 12-14): Lead middle school aged crews on week-long outdoor expedition service projects, camping each night and using conservation-based projects to facilitate experiential education opportunities. 
  3. High School Expedition Leader (Leads ages 14-17): Lead high school aged crews on month-long expeditions, camping each night and providing each crew with successive one- to two-week projects managing natural resources for the duration of each month. These leaders will have opportunity to creatively engage and mentor youth in an immersive setting which may see projects ranging all over Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, or the Dakotas.
  4. Youth Conservation Corps Leader (Leads ages 15-18): Lead high school aged crews for 8-10 weeks, working intensively in one community to fully explore a variety of hands-on natural resource projects. YCC crews are based in remote, rural communities around Montana.
 
Other duties include establishing and maintaining good working relationships with regional staff, members, project technical advisors, youth, and volunteers to ensure the successful on-site management of crews and monitoring of crew dynamics to ensure a high level of crew functioning and ensures that policies and procedures are followed by all members of their crew. Work may include building or maintaining trails, building fences, and habitat restoration, among many other types of projects. Not all Leaders will work on all types of projects. The Leader will assist with the recruitment of youth program participants. The Leader is an AmeriCorps participant and is entitled to the benefit package offered all AmeriCorps participant. The Leader and co-Leader are part of a leadership team working under the supervision of the Youth Program Coordinator. This position will have recurring access to vulnerable populations.
