Office Collections Officer (GEAR)

Job Responsibilities
GEAR Office Collections Officers perform collection of debts and enforcement of tax laws for the SCDOR with a focus on security and the protection of taxpayer information. Duties will include:

  • Generate and answer telephone calls and correspondence for GEAR in addition to answering general questions including, but not limited to, Sales & Use, Withholding, Individual Income, Miscellaneous and Corporate within SCDOR customer service guidelines.
  • Manage GEAR work items by using DOR computer systems to manage levies.
  • Conduct research of GEAR accounts by using DOR computer systems to identify mismatched payments, determine liabilities, and issue appropriate correspondence.
  • Use system to locate and update information.
  • Negotiate and process payment plan requests.
  • Develop, update, review and train new hires on section procedures.
  • Make suggestions and/or recommendations to improve existing practices or processes.
Office Collection Officers are assigned to the GEAR section as one of the 4 rotational assignments as they progress through the 4 levels of the plan.

Minimum and Additional Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in a business related field; or
  • An associate's degree in a business related field and two (2) years of relevant work experience
Academic degrees must be from an accredited institution of higher learning.
 
Preferred Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree, tax experience, customer service, and/or collections experience are highly preferred.
  • Must be able to deal independently with the public/customers in situations which may be controversial.
  • Must be able to use customer service skills in line with SCDOR standards in assisting taxpayers and fellow employees in all forms of communication providing professional courteous service.
  • Ability to schedule work assignments, make personal contact with taxpayers/customers, and prioritize accounts in collection status for case management.
  • Ability to control emotions and maintain consistent performance under pressure.
  • Must project professional demeanor and appearance, and promote the team concept to support SCDOR values, goals and mission statements.

  • SCDOR employees are required to comply with all SCDOR tax requirements and are subject to a National Criminal Background Check to include fingerprinting.
