EMS Battalion Chief

Performs difficult protective service and administrative work supervising the daily operations of emergency medical services, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the general direction of the EMS Division Head. Continuous supervision is exercised over emergency medical services staff.
Position Responsibilities
  • Plans and oversees daily operations of emergency medical services in accordance with Federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Establishes and evaluates procedures and operations.
  • Plans and oversees daily operations of emergency medical services in accordance with Federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Evaluates staff performance; takes personnel action and implements disciplinary actions; counsel staff regarding performance and employee personnel policies.
  • Compiles data, prepares reports, and maintains files.
  • Answers questions and resolves complaints.
  • Maintains specialized emergency medical equipment and supplies.
  • Performs all duties of a paramedic, when required.
  • Performs assigned functions as a Disaster Ready Team (DRT) member, if appointed or volunteer.
  • Performs related tasks as required.
Qualifications
Thorough knowledge of emergency medical services administration, practices and procedures; thorough knowledge of emergency medical treatment and specialized cardiac treatment; thorough knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to emergency medical services; thorough knowledge of the methods, materials practices, techniques and equipment required for emergency medical treatment; ability to respond quickly and calmly in emergency stress situations; ability to apply protocols relating to medical procedures, equipment operation and reporting requirements; ability to plan effective in service training and staff development programs; ability to evaluate and differentially diagnose patient's conditions and communicate clearly with professional medical personnel; ability to work well with others; ability to express ideas effectively, orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, officials, medical agencies, volunteers and the general public.
Education, Experience, and Special Requirements
Associates/Technical degree with coursework in emergency management services, or related field and extensive experience as a paramedic including some supervisory experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Must possess NIMS Incident Command System (ICS) 100, 200, 700 and 800 certifications; Drug Assisted Intubation certification; CPR certification; RSI and EMS certifications and maintain appropriate certificates as required by the State of North Carolina.

A driver's license that is valid in the State of North Carolina is also required.
