Interpretive Naturalist (underground)

Job Description
Crystal Cave is the longest cave in Wisconsin. Above ground there are 100 acres of forest, prairie, and farm fields. Our main lodge houses a gift store with rocks, fossils, jewelry, and other educational items. Cave tours and programs are offered to schools, summer camps, and the general public. We are a proud member of the National Caves Association and the International Show Cave Association; as such we strive to educate our guests about the importance of caves to the environment but no geology degree is required as we have a comprehensive training program.
It is critical that the successful candidate embrace the teaching of scientifically accepted facts of geology, biology, and conservation as well as the guest centric approach. Must enjoying talking and interacting with people. The position will work some weekends and holidays.
Out of Area Applicants: Crystal Cave has a limited number of fully furnished,non-smoking rooms available in our staff houses! Crystal Cave is located in Spring Valley, a rural town located between River Falls Wisconsin and Menomonie Wisconsin and only 1hour from Minneapolis / St. Paul Minnesota.
Overall Responsibilities: Lead (scripted) tours of Crystal Cave; To assist with general maintenance of the cave, gift shop and grounds as necessary. Multiple full time and part time positions are available.
Primary Duties:
  • To conduct informative, educational, and entertaining (scripted) walking tours of Crystal Cave. Hour long tours provide our visitors with current, scientifically accepted facts of geology, biology, and conservation, history of the cave, and occasional anecdotes. You will be trained on leading tours, previous geology background is not required.
  • To assist in teaching and facilitating non-tour educational programs.
  • To work with visitors by broadening their general knowledge of caves and nature.
  • Assist in the general maintenance and upkeep of the grounds, gardens, gift shop and cave.
  • To serve as an ambassador for Crystal Cave.
Qualifications:
  • Enjoy working with the general public and school groups.
  • Have an enthusiastic interest in nature and caves
  • Have the ability to communicate with visitors in a pleasant, confident and engaging manner
  • Communicate effectively with large groups of people of various ages, educational, ethnic and economic backgrounds.
  • Must be in good physical condition to be able to descend and ascend several flights of stairs and ramps several times each day, stand for extended periods of time, lift a minimum of 30 pounds, push a lawn mower.
  • Comfortable underground with the dark and with bats.
  • Able to learn and understand basic geology, biology, and conservation of caves.
  • Available daily (including weekends and holidays)
  • Must be able to pass criminal background check
