Drafting and Mapping Technician

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Skilled, technical engineering/computer related work of above average difficulty performing drafting tasks utilizing computer software applications (Esri ArcGIS) and developing and maintaining information utilizing Geographic Information System (GIS) applications. Work is performed under direct supervision with some latitude for independent judgment and decision within established policies and procedures, and is reviewed in progress and upon completion on the basis of observation, conferences, reports, and evaluations of results achieved. Duties may include creating and maintaining City infrastructure features (water, reclaimed water, wastewater, and storm water and other) from digital or hard-copy sources (record drawings, surveys, and field notes); researching and resolving GIS infrastructure related problems utilizing archived data, aerial photography and field research; preparing, maintaining and distributing City infrastructure atlases; GIS data acquisition, medium to complex GIS queries, data and map generation for a variety of department projects; assisting the Public and other City departments staff in defining their mapping and geographic data needs and aiding in interpreting maps and map features. Majority of this position will be utilizing Esri ArcGIS.
  DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  Drafts and updates Plats, maps and atlases using GIS software. Prepares standard and detailed maps and drawings of an engineering nature. Develops procedures to maintain accurate and efficient databases and quality control standards for usage. Translates incoming and outgoing data. Enters and maintains the data for GIS to ensure it meets all applicable standards. Analyzes the GIS databases for creating various reports. Provides technical assistance and guidance to City GIS users. Works with other City departments and outside agencies to assure project goals are met. Reads, verifies and writes legal descriptions. Performs research of records and deeds to obtain pertinent data for engineering projects. Prepares special charts and drawings for visual presentations. Maintains city atlases and engineering project records, as well as other similar clerical work. Performs related tasks as assigned.
 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
 High School graduation, or equivalent, supplemented by 6 months of accredited college, university or vocational course work in computerized mapping, GIS, computerized drafting, civil engineering, computer programming, cartography or other related field. Two (2) years of experience using GIS and/or Autocad in Engineering, drafting, computer cartography or other related work. Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
