Internship-Planning - TE

OPEN UNTIL FILLED

Under immediate direction of the Director of Planning and Development Services, and/or the Assistant Director, assists in the performance of numerous phases of City planning and zoning work. This is an opportunity for current or recent college graduates to receive knowledge and training within the planning scope throughout the City. May provide support to all levels and departments within the organization as projects and needs cross departments. This position assists professional staff in the preparation of planning research, surveys and projects. The internship is expected to last through the end of the Spring or Fall Semester, but may also occur during other times of the year.
 
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
 
This position is an internship position and does not function as a supervisor.
Examples of Duties
Work on numerous special projects within the Planning and Development Services Department.

Work on infill development initiatives, including compiling property inventories, improvements, analyses, zoning and condition assessments of existing residential and commercial properties for potential infill development opportunities.
Develop complex spreadsheets and databases of information and statistics on residential and commercial properties. Research, collect, and prepare information as assigned for analysis.
 
Gain and utilize professional knowledge and understanding of code and permitting requirements in the Planning and Development divisions to assist, greet, advise and direct the public as well as answer questions.

Continuously observe and contribute to methods, practices, problems, and principles related to professional assignments.
Review, organize and maintain files/documents. Recommend improvements to procedures and processes for efficiency.
 
Participate and assist with job activities as assigned including, but not limited to, outdoor activities.
 
Gain experience in the methodology of the ethics of professional conduct.

Gain municipal/local government compliance understanding and knowledge by reviewing the Abilene City Charter.

Typical Qualifications
Knowledge of:
 
Using a variety of computer software applications, especially Excel and Microsoft Word.
 
Office administration procedures.
 
Skill to:
 
Function with a high level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations and documents.
 
Attention to detail in composing, typing and proof-reading materials,
 
Establish priorities and meeting deadlines.
 
Operate computer equipment.
 
Use basic mathematical skills including percentages and means.
 
Ability to:
 
Communicate both orally and in writing.
 
Operate standard office equipment.
 
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

Experience and Training Guidelines:
 
Any combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying. Knowledge, skills, and abilities may be obtained through:
 
Experience:
 
This is an internship position and no previous experience is required.
 
Education/Training:
 
Graduation from High School or GED certification is required. 
 
Must be a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student possessing at least a 3.0 GPA or a recent college graduate.
           
License or Certificate:
           
A valid Driver's License is required.
 
Special Requirements:
 
Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:
 
The position requires the ability to work in both a standard office environment, and has the possibility of working outside in extreme temperatures.
