Newborn Screening Medical Laboratory Technologist

The Newborn Screening (NBS) Unit of the NC State Laboratory of Public Health is currently accepting applications for a Newborn Screening Medical Laboratory Technologist II. The NBS unit's primary purpose is to provide timely and accurate testing for North Carolinians in order to identify potentially life-threatening conditions in newborns.
 
The Newborn Screening Medical Laboratory Technologist II works in the Tandem Mass Spectrometry (MS/MS) laboratory. This laboratory performs dried blood spot (DBS) screening on newborns for fatty acid oxidation disorders, organic acid disorders, and amino acid disorders.
 
Responsibilities include:
  • Performing technically complex laboratory procedures while following proper standard and universal precautions on clinical specimens
  • Sorting and accessioning samples, then creating, exporting, and importing specimen test worksheets using a computer program and Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
  • Processing samples by precision reverse pipetting
  • Routine and detailed analysis
  • Troubleshooting and calibrating laboratory instrumentation
  • Preparing reagent stock solutions
  • Preparing quality control materials
  • Communicating technical information verbally and in writing
  • Maintaining SmartVue data logs
  • Conduct QA activities as part of the Quality Assurance program
  • Maintaining and tracking all lab inventory
  • Providing information to physicians, birthing hospitals, local health departments, and other healthcare provider

Education Requirements: Must meet CLIA '88 requirements for testing personnel in a high complexity laboratory. Applicants must provide copies of their transcript(s) and/or certification(s) to be considered for the position. Candidates must have at least an associate's in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology. For Bachelor's degrees, the degree must be in a chemical (chemistry), physical, biological (Biology), or clinical laboratory science.
