2019 Port Houston Summer Internships

We’re looking for Summer Interns who are willing think about the future…and think big! 

Seeking a career and not just a job? Port Houston is looking for college students to join our team as summer interns.  We have opportunities in a variety of areas such as: Maritime Operations, Engineering, Human Resources, Accounting, Communications, and more!  Interns work on projects that directly impact the bottom line of the organization. 

We emphasize the importance of valuable work for our Summer Interns.  We are devoted to providing a learning environment where students can gain valuable skills and experiences that contribute to their future careers while also learning about Port Houston’s business and culture.  

Business Need / Purpose of Role
Interns will take part in a fast-paced internship which will consist of projects, day to day activities and hands-on training to facilitate their learning.  Successful applicants will become integral members of the department while learning within a team environment, completing meaningful tasks, and collaborating with managers on projects.  You will have the opportunity to engage with senior leaders and subject matter experts who will be mentoring and coaching you to success.

Objectives & Measurement - Key Responsibilities
During the internship, Interns will be assigned to a specific team where their responsibilities will be aligned within their major(s) or interests.  Interns will:
  • Observe and discuss business operations, team-working environment, leadership, and management styles;
  • Shadow team members and supervisors to gain detailed insight to department operations;
  • Formulate alternative courses of actions and solicit feedback for professional development;
  • Collaborate with team members, management, and cross-functionally with other departments and Interns depending on the scope of the assignment(s). 

Interns will work up to 40-hours/week during the internship.

Qualifications

Education Requirements:
  • Must be a current student enrolled in a university.
  • Degrees in Maritime Administration, Maritime Transportation, Business Administration, Computer Science, Information Systems, Human Resources, Supply Chain, Engineering, Industrial Distribution, Accounting, and Security strongly preferred.
  • Seeking students who will be graduating in 2019, 2020, and 2021
  • Preference will be given to 2nd or 3rd year students. 
  • Graduate students will be considered on a case by case basis. 

Work Environment:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee may work outside for short periods of time and is exposed to moving mechanical parts.  The noise level in the work environment can be significant, as expected in a maritime operations facility. Personal protective equipment is required in certain areas. 

This position may require candidates to:
  • Provide an academic transcript for review;
  • Have and maintain a valid driver's license;
  • Have and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC);
  • Successfully complete a pre-employment medical screening, including drug and alcohol testing;
  • All positions require background screening.  Some include criminal and/or credit checks in order to comply with regulations;
  • Applicants must have legal authorization to work in the country in which the position is based with no restrictions.
