Business Tax Specialist

Under direct supervision, Business Tax Specialists analyze and reconcile business tax returns by researching the tax return, applying federal and state tax laws, and utilizing computer data to ensure compliance, while focusing on the security of taxpayer data. 

Duties: 
  • Review and verify out-of-state purchases of furniture and ATVs to ensure taxpayer compliance with SC Use Tax Laws.  
  • Issue assessment notices when necessary.  
  • Review tax returns for Accommodations, Solid Waste, and other various business tax returns to verify the accuracy of the returns and make corrections where needed.  
  • Communicate with taxpayers, taxpayer representatives, and counties/municipalities through various forms of communication, or in-person with assistance, to discuss and explain adjustments, amendments, and notices, and to provide proposed adjustments, refunds, and county/municipality allocations.  
  • Utilize tax systems, data warehousing information, and internet sources for interpretation and/or adjustment of business tax related returns.  
  • Review requests for waiver of penalty.  
  • Develop, update, and review section procedures. Make suggestions/recommendations to improve existing practices or processes.  
 Minimum and Additional Requirements:
* A bachelor's degree and experience in a business or tax related area.  
* A bachelor's degree with six hours of accounting courses may be substituted for the work experience requirement.
