Prep Room Specialist (Environmental Specialist 2) (In Training)

The Hazardous Waste and Toxics Reduction (HWTR) Program within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a Prep Room Specialist (Environmental Specialist 2) position. This position is located in our Headquarters Building in Lacey, WA.

We are looking for applicants with excellent sample preparation skills, the ability to work both in close proximity with other colleagues or independently, strong people skills, and the ability to complete repetitive tasks and follow directions.

The Hazardous Waste and Toxics Reduction (HWTR) Program is made up of people dedicated to fostering sustainability, preventing pollution, and promoting safe waste management. We do many different things in a coordinated approach to protect the people and environment of Washington from pollution from hazardous products and waste.

What does this position do?
The Prep Room Specialist supports the agency's consumer products testing work by collecting, preparing, and processing samples for outside analysis to determine the type and amount of toxic chemicals in consumer and industrial products. Some of the key duties include:
  • Prepare products for testing through size reduction and extraction into solution in support of toxics in consumer product laws
  • Collect and process samples which can include children's toys, clothing, brake pads, and carpet.
  • Set up and maintain testing equipment
  • Conduct data analysis, and evaluate and interpret data for compliance staff.
  • Help maintain the product testing database by suggesting changes and improvements
  • Assist senior staff in conducting professional scientific studies and provide analysis and assessment of the impacts of hazardous substances
  • Must be able to complete repetitive tasks for a long period of time.

This work unit is made up scientists, enforcement personnel, policy experts, database managers committed to protecting the public and Washington's environment from toxic chemicals contained in consumer products such as children's toys, car brakes, and office furniture.

This recruitment will remain open until filled. Qualifications


The goal class for this position is an Environmental Specialist 2 (ES2). We will consider applicants who meet the requirements for the ES1 and ES2 levels. If the finalist meets the requirements for the ES1 level they will be placed into a training program to become an ES2 within a specified period of time.

Required Qualifications:

At the Environmental Specialist 1 Level: $2722 - $3592 Monthly

A Bachelor's Degree involving major study in environmental, physical, or one of the natural sciences, environmental planning or other allied field.
 
Experience at or above the Environmental Technician level or Equivalent will substitute, year for year, for education.



At the Environmental Specialist 2 Level: $3267- $4275 Monthly 

A Bachelor's Degree involving major study in environmental, physical, or one of the natural sciences, environmental planning or other allied field AND one year of professional level experience in environmental analysis or control, or environmental planning. 
 
Additional qualifying experience will substitute, year for year for education.
 
OR
 
A Master's degree in one of the above fields.

 
 
Desired Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in environmental studies, biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or public health.
  • Database management
  • Operation of chemistry screening equipment
  • Report writing experience
  • Conflict Resolution and team-building skills
