Pet Health Veterinary Externship - Summer 2019

SUMMARY:
The PetSmart Pet Health Veterinary Team is pleased to offer a summer externship opportunity for students currently enrolled in their first or second year at a veterinary school. In this paid externship, students will work closely with the Pet Health Veterinary Team in the Specialty department at the Phoenix Home Office. The Specialty department focuses on activities related to small mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and invertebrates. Students will gain exposure to a variety of aspects within the company including, but not limited to, specialty pet health, public health, research, specialty merchandising and specialty product development.

EXPECTATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direction of the pet health and veterinary staff, students will:
  • Participate in the daily monitoring of the pet health support site for responding to store questions by reviewing cases and medical records
  • Assist veterinary staff with any current projects related to pet health or product development which may include physical examinations or diagnostics in fish or other specialty pets, data collection, research or data analysis
  • Review processes, operations and statistics regarding pet health and assist with developing modifications for continuous improvement
  • Attend and participate in weekly pet health, specialty staff and business review meetings
  • Complete a project designed in an area of interest (public health, exotic animal pets or business) that contributes to our knowledge base and present it at the end of the externship

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must be currently enrolled as a veterinary student in an accredited veterinary school
  • Must have the ability to effectively work independently and within a team
  • Must have the ability to follow specific instructions and also be comfortable self-directing
  • Ability to communicate ideas and contribute effectively
  • Exotic animal pet or fish experience or interest in epidemiology or One Health is a plus

COMMITMENT:
  • Internship runs June 2019 – August 2019 (10 weeks)
  • 5-day/40-hour work week during normal business hours
  • Paid externship
  • Furnished housing is provided
  • Must have own transportation to the office, free parking is available
