Historical Imagery Acquisition Project

One ORISE research opportunity is available with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA). This opportunity would be located in Arlington, VA. DPAA is seeking candidates with a graduate level degree in Geographic Information Systems or related field. Remote sensing/GIS background strongly preferred. U.S. Citizenship is required. This opportunity is a twelve month research appointment with the opportunity to be renewed additional appointment terms. The opportunity includes, but is not limited to, the following:

 Conduct a comprehensive assessment of historical imagery holdings at NARA that will support Indo-Pacific casualty accounting. Research, acquire and digitize historical aerial imagery overlays from the National Archives. Create a geo-database of archival imagery holdings for use by DPAA researchers. Acquire and digitize historical imagery and maps for Indo-Pacific areas of focus.

Research will extend the participant's understanding of how the United States Government conducted reconnaissance during past conflicts both through aerial and remote sensing methods. Provides in-depth knowledge of how the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) indexes and stores imagery and mapping data collected during both wartime and peace. Offers introduction into archival partners around the world as well as United States historical holdings of foreign aerial photography.
