Traffic Resource Engineer - Transportation Engineer 2

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Traffic Operations is seeking an experienced candidate to fill the Traffic Resource Engineer vacancy in Olympia, WA. This position assists in administering the Outdoor Advertising and Motorist Information Sign programs.
 
The Traffic Operations oversees the design and placement of signs, signals, pavement markings, lighting, work zone safety and intelligent transportation systems. It works with partners on traffic safety initiatives aimed at reducing fatalities and serious injuries from motor vehicle crashes.

This position will perform the following work:
  • Process Outdoor Advertising Control (OAC) applications.
  • Update and maintain database of over 2000 permits.
  • Assists with annual renewal certification of all sign permit records, send invoices to all businesses that collect a rental income and insures all permits are renewed.
  • Provide information to county auditors regarding campaign signs.
  • Prepares letters asking property owners to remove illegal signs
  • Conducts field reviews of sign permits and regulated routes across the state.
  • Manage Type 8 (temporary agricultural directional signs) Program.
  • Responds to requests for temporary agricultural signing.
  • Permit or denies temporary agricultural permits by determining property owner information and compliance with state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Track expiration dates of current permitted signs (permits valid for five years) and notify permit owner of pending expiration.
  • Other Traffic office duties as needed.
 
 Ideal candidates for this position will possess the following:
OR
  • A Bachelor's degree with major study in civil engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, traffic, transportation or a closely related field is desirable.
  • Working knowledge of Scenic Vistas Act of 1971 and the Motorist Information Signing Program.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of federal and state laws and regulations regarding Outdoor Advertising Control and motorist information signing principles.
  • Valid unrestricted driver's license and ability to travel statewide with overnight stays
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions, on steep and uneven terrain near fast moving traffic.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Two (2) years of Traffic Operations experience applying key knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, Traffic Manual, Sign Fabrication Manual, Design Manual and other WSDOT publications is not required, but desired.
