Environmental Protection Engineer I

Under direct supervision of the Des Plaines Regional Manager, Des Plaines Regional Office, Field Operations Section (FOS), Division of Water Pollution Control, Bureau of Water, assists higher level field staff to gain knowledge and training in performing a variety of routine engineering functions; conducting livestock feeding facility surveys, stream pollution surveys of problems related to livestock waste discharges or agricultural chemical; participates in inspections and sampling/surveys at industrial storm water facilities, storm water construction sites and municipal separate storm sewer systems (MS4) communities to assess compliance and adequacy of operation and maintenance of municipal, industrial and private wastewater treatment facilities; assists higher level field staff in performing routine reviews of National Pollutant Discharge Elimination Systems (NPDES) permits, State Operating Permits, facility plans and specifications, Long Term Control Plans (LTCP) and Capacity, Management, Operation and Maintenance (CMOM) plans; assembling data and reports of treatment facilities governed by the Clean Water Act. Assists in investigating/evaluating routine citizen complaints of odors/pollution from livestock or agricultural chemical operations and routine fish kill incidents; prepares routine engineering data/reports for use in enforcement actions; updates computer inspection/complaint tracking databases. Participates and observes compliance conferences involving violations of the Bureau of Water policies and Clean Water Act requirements. Travels in performance of duties.
Minimum Requirements
Education and Experience: Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of college with a bachelor's degree in an engineering science. Typically, the subject matter would involve the type of course work associated with environmental (sanitary, hydraulic, hydrology and air pollution specialties), civil (sanitary, hydraulic ad hydrology specialties), civil (sanitary, hydraulic and hydrology specialties), general, industrial, mechanical, chemical, public health, electronic, acoustical or aeronautical engineering or engineering mechanics or a closely related engineering specialty. Prefers a bachelor's degree in agricultural or civil engineering.
Requires no previous experience.

Specific Job Requirements: Requires ability to lift heavy sampling equipment (e.g. 50 pounds). Requires a valid driver's license and the ability to travel. Ability to utilize a personal computer with knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Access software.

Desirable Requirements: Ability to prepare comprehensive written engineering reports; ability to establish and maintain oral communication and working relationships with municipal officials, facility operators and owners, plant managers or their representatives.
