About Pacific Northwest National Laboratory

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) advances the frontiers of knowledge, taking on some of the world’s greatest science and technology challenges. Distinctive strengths in chemistry, earth sciences, and data analytics are the heart of our science mission, laying a foundation for innovations that improve America’s energy resiliency and enhance our national security.

We are a national lab with Pacific Northwest roots and global reach. Whether our researchers are unlocking the mysteries of Earth’s climate, helping modernize the US electric power grid, or safeguarding ports around the world from nuclear smuggling, we accept great challenges for one purpose: to create a world that is safer, cleaner, more prosperous, and more secure.

We're located in Richland, Wash., and are one among ten U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratories managed by DOE's Office of Science. Our research strengthens the U.S. foundation for innovation. And we help find solutions for not only DOE, but for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the National Nuclear Security Administration, other government agencies, universities and industry.

The team at PNNL are recipients of the 2021 and 2022 Handshake Early Talent Awards! This award honors employers with best-in-class talent engagement and celebrates the teams that launch early careers to new heights.

Reviews

PhD Intern

May 2022 Richland, WA
“I have lots to share about my internship at PNNL. First, the working environment is conducive and supportive for us to grow and learn more. For instance, I intern in a team that works with the 5G applications specifically extracting its potential to resolve challenges in power systems. The 5G experience is closely related to my academic dissertation and therefore, I gained lots of practical knowledge pertaining to it. Second, work flexibility. The scientists over here recognize that we are students and so they are very flexible with respect to the work given to us. Third, publication avenues. If we make an initiative they are always ready to help us in any way possible. To summarize, this internship provided me with a deeper understanding of 5G, and I published one conference paper (IEEE Southeast con 2023), another paper will be submitted soon to a conference, and I successfully published 2 datasets pertaining to 5G. This is helping me to expand my resume and experience. Seriously, this internship is gift of god to me. ”

“I liked working with other mechanical engineers and computer scientists on a project I was interested in. I liked that I got to work independently and learn new software on my own and develop my problem-solving skills.”
